Thirst as common people know is a sensation aroused by dryness of mouth and throat which can be relieved by merely moistening them. But true thirst is associated with a decrease in extracellular fluid volume or an increase in plasma osmolality(Plasma osmolality measures the body's electrolyte-water balance.).
What happens then??- Decrease in Extracellular fluid volume(ECFV) causes decrease in blood pressure which then via baroreceptors (special receptors which regulate blood pressure) produce thirst sensations.
-Increase in plasma osmolality activates osmoreceptors (Receptors which maintain osmolality of blood)in hypothalamus which consequently also results in thirst sensation.
